If you’ve visited Google, WordPress, Wikipedia, or a number of other sites today, you’ve no doubt read about the anti-censorship movement. You might also be aware of it just because you keep up on these kinda things, but SOPA/PIPA are horrible bits of overzealous legislation that Congress is to be discussing soon. The aim is protection against online piracy, but the reach is too far and the language too vague to let it pass. As is often the case, when trying to restrict criminals – it’s the law-abiding folks who would suffer more. Case in point: want to skip an FBI warning on that DVD you bought? Think someone who’s downloaded it illegally has the same issue?
It’s pretty darn cool to see some of these big names online take a visible stand against it all. I imagine those less-in-the-know might wonder why Google’s name is covered up, and be educated, but could you imagine how much bigger it’d be if someone like Facebook shut down for the day in protest? Still, though, it’s all for naught if nobody responds, so… read up and do your part. I think our stick man would approve
